Mark Making

Mark making refers simply to the different shapes, lines, patterns and textures a child creates, using one item on another. Mark making is a crucial step along the journey to self-expression and the ability to communicate. Contributing to handwriting skills later on, as well as creativity and coordination, this can take many forms.

Facilitating mark making is not only to encourage kids to be writing words on paper. It can take the form of learning the time, addition, drawing or writing – and in so many ways, from ephemeral markings in the mud or sandpit with a stick, or chalk on a board, to paint, pens, pencils or crayons on paper.
