Caring for your outdoor wooden products

A helpful guide to getting the best from your timber

Thank you for choosing our handcrafted wooden products. We’re proud to use natural,
sustainably sourced wood in all our designs — and with a little simple care, your product will last for many years to come.

Understanding Natural Wood

Why does my wood have cracks or imperfections?

Wood is a raw, living material, and each piece has its own unique character. Over time, you may notice small cracks, splits, or slight movement in the timber, especially in pieces cut from whole tree trunks. These changes are completely natural and expected. As the wood adjusts to seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, it expands and contracts , this is just the wood “breathing.”

Please note: These natural movements do not affect the strength or durability of the product. They’re not flaws or faults, they’re part of what makes each item truly one-of-a-kind.

Can wood be defective?

Unlike manufactured materials, solid wood doesn’t have components that can ‘go wrong.’ Unless there is visible rot (which is rare in our carefully graded timber), your product is in great shape. If you ever feel unsure, please get in touch, we’re happy to help.

Treatment & Protection: helping your wood last even longer

Is my item already treated?

Yes! All of our wooden products are pressure-treated to help protect against rot and fungal decay. This deep treatment gives your timber a strong layer of protection that can last up to 15 years.

Will the colour change over time?

Yes and beautifully so! As wood weathers naturally, it will develop a charming silvery-grey patina. This ageing process is part of the timber’s charm and character.
However, if you’d like to preserve its original colour and extend its life even more, we recommend some seasonal care.

Simple seasonal maintenance tips

Should I oil or coat my product?

We recommend applying a clear decking oil or a similar timber treatment once a year which will:
• Replenish moisture in the wood
• Help reduce the appearance of cracks and splits
• Slow down the natural weathering process
• Enhance the wood’s natural beauty
Apply oil in dry weather, using a brush or cloth, and always follow the product instructions

Top Tip

Place your furniture on a well-drained surface and avoid letting water pool on horizontal surfaces — this will help prevent any moisture-related wear over time.

FAQs

Q: Are small splits or rough patches something to worry about?
A: Not at all, they’re a normal part of timber’s behaviour and won’t affect the strength of your item.
Q: How often should I re-treat the wood?
A: Once a year is ideal. Early spring is a great time to do it before the summer weather sets in.
Q: What if I’m unsure about something?
A: We’re here to help. If you have any concerns about your product, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
