Construction
There are so many benefits to be had from construction play, for kids in Early Years settings and right up through their education. From supporting the development of fine and gross motor skills to encouraging kids to creatively problem solve and use their imaginations, construction play encourages cooperative play, prompts foundational mathematical and physics learning, and builds focus and patience. It also builds pride and resilience, and they learn how to succeed – and how to learn from their mistakes and persevere.
Construction play can start as small as Lego blocks and go right up to large-scale den buildings and builders’ benches. Use wheelbarrows to move construction items, and balance scales to weigh your construction items against one another and make them balance. Bring in other found materials, from branches and bricks to cardboard tubes and boxes – and the imaginative play will be never-ending.
